The famous picture above by Da Vinci depicts a variety of heads – caricatures and types of characters that would have been familiar to him in his day. Many of Da Vinci’s sketches such as this one have been carefully preserved for posterity. Nevertheless, many of his writings and manuscripts have been lost forever.
So imagine the excitement recently when a manuscript by Leonardo Da Vinci long thought to be lost was discovered in a public library in France. Academics were abuzz with excitement!
According to a BBC report, this valuable manuscript is just one of about 5,000 others that were donated to the library by a wealthy collector in 1872. Apparently this long lost manuscript – actually only a fragment – was found after a journalist came across a reference to it in a book.
The interesting thing is that the manuscript is written in code. And even more interesting is the fact that no one has managed to decipher it yet!
So the question is – why did Leonardo use code and mirror writing in the first place? What is in those manuscripts that he so badly wanted to keep a secret? Or was he simply worried that he would be arrested for entertaining his revolutionary new ideas?
